The boys, 15 and 16, were leaving a Police Activity League center, which offers youth development activities, in Longwood at around 9 p.m. when shots started to ring out, according to the police.

The older boy, who was shot in the leg, was listed in stable condition; the 15-year-old was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries on Friday afternoon, the police said. His name was not immediately released, pending family notification.

The police said that a single shooter was seen fleeing the scene on foot, and two shell casings were recovered.

At around the same time Thursday evening, another 15-year-old boy was shot in the arm near the Eagle Academy for Young Men at Ocean Hill in Brooklyn. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition, the authorities said. A 17-year-old boy was apprehended and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, but it was not immediately clear if he was the shooter.
