After being spared much of this summer’s misery, New York City and other parts of the Northeast are facing several scorching days starting on Tuesday, with expected highs in the mid-90s for much of the region through Sunday.
Wednesday and Thursday will likely feel like the hottest days of the week in New York, with humidity and temperatures combining for a heat index of around 100 degrees, said Melissa Di Spigna, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., are all forecast to see similar temperatures this week.
Before the heat arrives, a string of thunderstorms could roll through. The Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook on Monday for New York, New Jersey and southern Connecticut, warning of a small risk of an isolated tornado, as well as damaging winds and showers starting in the late afternoon and through the evening.
Heavy downpours could also lead to local flooding, the Weather Service advisory said. A high rip current risk — meaning dangerous wind or wave conditions — has also been issued for parts of New York City through Tuesday evening.
